In a world full of Zombies and miss-information about them, isn’t about time that someone sorted out the Walking Dead? If someone did this, how many lives would be saved simply from being properly educated?
Author Ross Payton has thrown together arguably the greatest field resource for would-be Zombologists to sort through all the madness that are the many variations of Walking Corpses in his new book Zombies of the World: A Field Guide to the Walking Dead!
What makes this book so different from all the other Zombie Survival/Educational Manuals out there? To put it simply: Everything! The book reads as if the author threw a Zombie Text book, A Zombie Rights Guide, A Zombie Pop-culture reference tome and a Zombie Identification guide into a massive literary blender and hit the frappe button to amalgamate them into a smooth cocktail of terror like none other!
Zombies of the World compares twenty different species of Zombies ranging from the classic “Gray Shambler” to the lesser known (Evil Dead Inspired) “North American Cabin Lurker” and even the truly horrifying (Jason Voorhees style) and nearly invincible “Revenant”. Not only does the book list the Undead, it breaks them down by Name, Description, Habits and Habitats, Reproduction, and for your convenience, where they can be found in the world! Each Walker (or Dancer in one case) is accompanied by epic illustrations!
Speaking of epic illustrations, almost every page had this Zombie Fanatic drooling with delight as I took a few moments to really appreciate the art of this phenomenal book. The artistic styles vary but include Comic Book, Painting, and even Classified Document!
Another wicked aspect of the book is that maybe humans are the biggest threat you might face when dealing with a Zombie Outbreak! Yes, you read that correctly: Humans may be MORE DANGEROUS than your average Zombie!
How so you ask? Check out this breakdown of the types of dangerous humans out there to be weary of (right out of the book and a sweet poster you can find on the website!)
*Armed Survivalist – “An armed American is a Free American”
*Religious Fanatic – “The Day of Judgment is at hand! Repent or Die!”
*Mentally Ill – “Mom is fine, she’s just a severed head!”
*Criminal – “You gotta pay if you want protection!”
*Unstable Authority Figure – “I’m in charge and what I say goes. Or Else!”
*Skeptic – “I didn’t board up the door because there is nothing to worry about.”
*Control Freak – “Do as I say and no one gets hurt.”
*Addict – “I need my fix.”
(And arguably the most dangerous of all)*Teenager – “Like, What?”
Fear not survivors, Psychos are not the only humans in Payton’s Zombie Infected World guide, it also tells readers who they can trust and how to react when face-to-face with The Living Dead! In Payton’s world groups exist to help fight for Zombie Rights.
Look, we already know what you are thinking: “What Zombie Rights?!”
Actually, Zombie Rights may not be the correct choice of words. Zombies of the World has an entire section dedicated to the Science of Zombies including how we may be able to use Zombies as a Renewable energy source, the study of Zombies and potential human immortality, and possible Zombie Domestication! The point of the section is that perhaps it is foolish for the human race to try to eliminate ALL of the Undead when there is so much for science to gain from the study of their existence!
So… like we said, this book has just about everything (even some inside nods that only REAL Zombie enthusiasts will catch) all packed in only 111 pages! This is a quick and enjoyable read but has a surprising re-read value. After finishing the book, don’t be surprised to find yourself picking it back up just to jump back to your favorite section!
It is obvious, as stated in the Author’s Preface, of his love of both Zombies and non-fiction books on “fictional topics”, and he has done a stellar job of creating the latter! At only $18.95, this book would make a great gift, addition to your personal library or even just a toilet reader, and is a true “can’t miss” for any self-proclaimed Zombologist or even just the casual Zombie enthusiast!
