“Zombie Terrors” A Graphic Novel

When I was out christmas shopping a wonderful graphic novel caught my eye. “Zombie Terrors: Vol. 1 An Anthology of the Undead” was just screaming for me to pick it up. The cover shows a rather pretty, busty brunette who has her left shoulder bit open by a zombie while he’s pulling her shirt off. This wonderful anthology of 15 short illustrated stories reminds me of the old “Tales from the Crypt” pulp comics. There are even pages that would make great pin-up style zombie posters. Just tear them out and frame!

This was a great read without having to be too committed. Some of the story lines stem from nothing you haven’t seen before and other tales have twists that even I wasn’t expecting. All of the artwork is disgusting where it needs to be and the writing is easily accessible. Asylum Press did a good job putting this zombie anthology  together.

A few of my favorite stories from “Zombie Terrors” are “Feast”, “Hate”, “The Jiang Shi” and “Prey”.

“Feast” takes a typical story about gangsters, power and greed but flips it sideways with the extra element of zombies. Part of this story definitely made my stomach lurch and I’m pretty sure I skipped lunch after reading it. That sort of reaction gets a thumbs up in my book.

“Hate” is drawn or painted in a way that I really love. It looks like it was done with oil paints and the story is a romanticized version of how much humans and zombies hate each other. By the end of the story you almost find yourself admiring how honest a zombie really is.

“The Jiang Shi” made me think that the author may have been trying to make a political point about the relationship between the United States and China. But I don’t know that for sure. Let’s just say that an american ventures to China to satiate  his curiosity. We all know what happened to the cat, right?

“Prey” is in black and white and is a dark tale of a junkie who is working madly at staying alive. It’s kind of funny to think of a junkie as the last living human when they are mostly, already, dead. the end of the story makes me think of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”. You’ll have to read it to see wheat I’m talking about.

“Zombie Terrors” will be an annual anthology shipping Halloween every year. Can’t wait for the next one!

There is a great preview of “Zombie Terrors Vol.1 An Anothology of the Undead” online through this link. ZOMBIE TERRORS PREVIEW.
