In Florida, a naked man ate another man’s face. In Northern California, a naked MMA fighter cut out his friend’s heart and ate it while he was still alive. In Texas, a woman woman ate the toes, face, and brain of her three week old infant son. In New Jersey, a man stabbed himself 50 times before throwing his intestines at police. In the Chicago area an elderly Chinese immigrant kills his wife and consumes part of her arm. The end of days may come sooner than we think as “Zombies” seem to be everywhere.
Ever alert to the impending Zombie threat, we at ZZN take the concept and plausibility of the Zombie Apocalypse very seriously. In this article we will take a closer look at recent cases of possible “Zombie Attacks” across the U.S. and attempt to determine whether or not they constitute a Zombie attack.
For the sake of this article, we will define a Zombie as someone who exhibits “Zombie-like” traits such as violent outbursts up to and including feeding on the flesh of others while being unresponsive to external threats and exhibiting little to no verbal communication skills, logic or reasoning.

Jarrod Wyatt was an up and coming MMA fighter who had just won his first professional fight in October of 2009. By March of 2010, he would eat the heart of a friend.
Dr. Neil Kushner, who was the only witness called in Wyatt’s testified in detail about his examination of Powell’s remains, during which he determined Powell’s heart was removed from his body while he was still alive. Further, Kushner testified that the hyoid bone in Powell’s throat had been fractured, indicating he’d been choked, and that he suffered blunt force trauma to his face and brain and his eyeballs and tongue had been removed. Evidence indicates many of the injuries were likely sustained while Powell was still alive, Kushner testified.
Testimony at Wyatt’s initial preliminary hearing indicated that the defendant, allegedly under the influence of psychedelic mushroom tea at a Klamath residence, became preoccupied with the idea that a tidal wave was coming and that the end of the world was near.
When police arrived to a report of a stabbing at the residence, they reported finding Wyatt naked and covered in blood from head to toe. When officers contacted him, Wyatt told them, “I killed him,” and said he’d cut out Powell’s heart and tongue, according to court documents.
The ZZN Verdict: NOT a Zombie. Though Wyatt had eaten parts of his victim, cannibalism alone does not constitute Zombism. The fact that he was able to confess to his crime shows logic which is not found in a Zombie.

Otty Sanchez brutally mutilated and consumed much of her infant son. She claims the Devil made her do it.
Police said it was too heinous to describe further. When they arrived, Sanchez was sitting on the couch screaming that she had killed her baby and that the Devil made her do it.
Also in Texas, back in 2004, Dena Schlosser killed her 10-month-old in her Plano home by slicing off the baby’s arms. She was found not guilty of reason by insanity, after testifying that she killed the baby because she wanted to give her to God.
The ZZN Verdict:Not Zombies: Each woman mutilated their child in unimaginable ways and though Sanchez consumed parts of her son she showed remorse, which requires logic and reasoning. Schlosser was able to communicate that she gave her child to God.
More recently– In the last week to be exact –there have been two cases that some are considered too close to Zombie-like to be ignored.
The first is the case of Rudy Eugene, 31, (AKA “The Miami Zombie”)who ate 75% of the face of Robert Poppo, 65, before being shot to death by police. Eugene did not respond to being shot and continued to eat Poppo’s face until he died. In an update to this story, Eugene’s mother and girlfriend were interviewed by CNN and told the news network that Eugene was a God Fearing man who often carried a Bible and could easily quote scripture. His girlfriend told CNN that it was Eugene’s body, but not his spirit. Both women claim that Eugene was not a Zombie and that his actions were nothing like anything he had ever done before.
The ZZN Verdict:POSSIBLY a Zombie. Though a street drug known as Bath Salts have been blamed for Eugene’s actions, and those close to him claim he was not a Zombie, one cannot ignore the facts:
*Eugene ate a man’s face.
*Eugene did not respond to being SHOT several (up to six) times.
*Eugene’s only communication with police was a growl, according to witnesses.
*Eugene’s actions were nothing like his “normal” personality.
The toxicology report will likely take up to a month, however even if it comes back positive for Bath Salts, all that proves is that there are drugs out there that can make an otherwise decent man into a flesh hungry monster.
Next, we look at the strange case of Wayne Carter, 43, of Hackensack, NJ. Carter called police saying he was going to hurt himself. When police arrived, Carter had used furniture to barricade himself into his home where he stabbed himself approximately fifty times. When police tried to talk him down, Carter threw chunks of his own intestines and flesh at the officers. They retreated and called in the S.W.A.T. team who was able to subdue Carter. Carter is currently in thecritical condition in Hackensack University Medical Center intensive care unit. Carter had a history of psychiatric health issues and resisting resist.
The ZZN Verdict: Disgusting, but NOT a Zombie. There are several reasons that the Carter case does not constitute a case of Zombification. First, Carter hurt himself not others. Second, there was no cannibalism, and finally, though undeniably insane, Carter was able to communicate.
Last, but not least is the case of 79 year-old Chinese immigrant Jieming Liu who possibly suffered from dementia as he killed his wife, Yuee Zhou, 73.
When returning home to visit his parents, the elderly couple’s son discovered his mother in a pool of blood on the floor with her arm severed below the elbow. Flesh was missing from the limb and his father had been eating it. His father sat in a chair in the room and is reported to have told his son that she was “not his Mother”.
The ZZN Verdict: Mr. Liu is NOT a Zombie. Though we cannot explain why he killed and consumed part of his wife, the fact that he was able to communicate to his son and is able to stand trial rules out Zombism.
Many across the country are gearing up for the Zombie Apocalypse and watching the news for cases like these. We like to live by the following creed: “BETTER SAFE THAN ZOMBIE”.

Although cases of cannibalism go way back, I like to think these guys as pre-zombie, which is the point of un-human like behavior, but ends up fading/dieing away over time. Kinda like when I think I’m getting sick, but the sickness isn’t that strong, so I don’t get that sick or even to a point where I could even call myself sick.
Perhaps if a Zombie Apocalypse ever started, the weakest (the pre-zombies listed here) would be the first to become infected (assuming that’s the way it gets started.).
…OR would these ex-pre-zombie victims that had logic all along be immune to zombies and zombie attacks, thus making them the strongest or the only ones to survive? Could this be a genetic factor rather than a drug or psychological issue? I find these cases and people interesting, like mediums between zombie and human and deserve attention.
