As 65 year-old homeless man Ronald Poppo relaxed in the shades of a palm tree on the Biscayne Boulevard off-ramp in Miami, Fl on Saturday he was approached by a naked Rudy Eugene. The Horrific events that followed left Eugene dead and Poppo fighting for his life.
For almost eighteen minutes Eugene savagely pummeled, beat, and eventually consumed 75% of the face of Poppo before a police officer identified as Jose Rivera arrived to end the attack and Eugene’s life. In the time it took for the attack to happen, at least three bicyclists rode past the two bloody men.
Also among the witnesses were several motorists and a Road Ranger from the Florida Department of Transportation with at least five of them placing calls to Miami Police. The first call to police came from a motorist who apparently saw Eugene before the attack and reported to police that he stripped off his clothes and was acting “erratically”. It is unclear of the time of the first call.
A newly released 23 minute video from The Miami Herald shows that Eugene hunched over his victim in the shade of the tree for about two minutes before the attack began then later dragged him into the sun where he stripped off Poppo’s pants while he kicked and fought back the attack. Eugene then climbed atop Poppo where he remained for several minutes as he consumed his victim’s face and attempted to gouge out his eyes.
Officer Rivera reported to the scene and attempted to stop Eugene with warnings before opening fire and ultimately killing him and potentially saving Poppo’s life.
New details have also emerged about each man’s lives pre-attack. Ronald Poppo has been living on the Streets of Miami for the last three decades and apparently had a bright future in high school according to the Miami Herald.
Rudy Eugene was a divorcee who had been partying earlier in the day in Miami Beach for Urban Beach Week. Eugene’s girlfriend stated that the night before the attack, he had been with her in Miami Gardens and had been acting “strangely”.
Due to the fact that the toxicology report will most likely take several weeks and there were no drugs or paraphernalia found at the scene, it is uncertain if drugs were to blame for the actions of Eugene.
Ronald Poppo is still in critical condition at the Jackson Memorial Hospital. Due to his homelessness it is unlikely that he will be able to afford the medical attention and rehabilitation he needs.
