The Walking Dead: A New Day Brings A New Day to Zombie Games

A New Day marks a new chapter of The Walking Dead in a beautiful way!

The Walking Dead video game has been one of the most anticipated pieces of downloadable content games in recent memory and with good reason: The Walking Dead is amazing. It all started with a graphic novel turned AMC hit television show, and spawned a series of action figures by genius Todd McFarlane, a full novel and now finally fans can interact with the universe they have come to love with the game!

The game has been set to be released in a total of 5 “episodes” monthly with the first title, “A New Day” released late last month. A total of Five games for only $19.95 is a pretty sweet deal considering the replay value is higher than most full priced games out today.

The game follows Lee Everett, a convicted felon who escapes while in transport due to a car accident. His first run in with the undead happens as he has to fend off the very officer who was driving him. Before he can wrap his head around what is happening he finds himself in a fenced in back yard and soon meets the games second protagonist, an eight year old by the name of Clementine. Clementine is a sweet girl who has survived by holding up in a tree house. Her parents are long gone and presumed dead.

As the story unfolds, players meet familiar characters like Hershel Greene and good ‘ol boy Glenn, who have both been pivotal characters in the series and have been seen on the television show.

From a graphics standpoint, the game is amazing. Don’t expect photo realistic imagery, instead players are treated to graphic novel style art that draws players into the game as if they were turning the pages of Robert Kirkman’s brilliance.

Game play is nothing like most would expect. This is not a first person shooter or a run and hide strategy game. This is unique. Play is done with a cursor and, though you collect items, most only appear again when you need to use them so you don’t have to sift through a thousand items while a horde closes in. The action is intense as you often have to make split-second decisions that may affect the rest of the game and how it unfolds. Every choice you make, from the things you say to the people you save, will change the game, even if you say nothing at all.

The game is easy enough to control that even the most novice players will navigate with ease, while the in-depth story line and edge-of-your-seat-just-pissed-yourself action keeps even the most seasoned vets from leaving the game. You WILL play through in one sitting, so be ready to devote a few hours to a story that will stick with you and leave you wanting the next “Episode” in the same way the season finales make you wish you could go into a state of suspended animation until the next season starts!

Meet the cast! From the Official Facebook Page, we give you the bios of the characters you will come to know and love, or in some cases hate!

LEE EVERETT-
Born and raised in Macon, Georgia, Lee Everett is a man with regrets. A college professor whose life took a turn when he was convicted of killing a man who was sleeping with his wife, he claims self-defense; the state thought differently. He’s a strong, thoughtful man who can fight hard when pushed.

CLEMENTINE-
Clementine is a quiet and imaginative girl with two attentive, loving parents. She’s incredibly resourceful, choosing to spend time building elaborate fantasies in her tree-house instead of watching cartoons or playing with dolls. She doesn’t get scared but will clam up if nervous. Reserved and shy, her actions speak louder than her words.

GLENN-
Glenn is a likable and resourceful guy who is always willing to help. After failing to reconnect with his estranged family, Glenn is on the road back to Atlanta where he hopes to find his brother and where fate will lead him to meet up with a Kentucky Sherriff’s Deputy looking for his family.

HERSHEL GREENE-
A farm owner, Hershel Greene is suspicious of outsiders and somewhat unwilling to believe the stories he hears coming from the city. Hershel is emotionally distant and a little old-school, but loves his family very much. His farm will bear witness to events that will affect the lives of many others.

SHAWN GREENE-
Hershel Greene’s son, Shawn, is a kind, good-spirited kid who knows his dad loves him but often has to be convinced to do any work around the family farm.

LILLY-
Stationed at Robins Air Force Base, Lilly is the daughter of an Army man. She is used to dealing with pushy military men and immediately takes charge in tough situations. While incredibly strong-willed, she will always submit to her dad (Larry), a grizzled old man with a history of heart problems. Fate will one day drive Lilly to have a huge impact on the life of Deputy Sherriff Rick Grimes.

CARLEY-
A regional news reporter from Atlanta, Carley is a quick-thinker. She knows she’s attractive but she won’t take crap from anyone. Having spent time as a correspondent in various warzones, she feels that she can take care of herself and isn’t afraid to use firepower as a solution to the problems that face her.

KENNY-
A likable, but nevertheless flawed man, Kenny is a fishing boat captain from Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is a sharp, hard-working guy who likes to take action and make things happen. Kenny’s family is his top priority.

“DUCK”-
Duck is the 10 year old son of Kenny and Katjaa. What he lacks in smarts he makes up for with enthusiasm. Loud and boisterous, he is the opposite of the quiet and thoughtful Clementine.
(Funny ZZN side note: Duck strangely resembles SID from Toy Story)

KATTJAA-
Katjaa is Kenny’s wife and mother to Duck (Kenny Jr.). A veterinarian by trade, her family is from Belgium, moving with her to south Florida in her teens where she met Kenny. Katjaa is blunt and says what’s on her mind.

DOUG-
Doug is a likable, unthreatening IT guy. He is incredibly resourceful and painfully logical, in a way that only IT guys can be. When he gets mad he is more likely to do something passive-aggressive than to get in anyone’s face.

LARRY-
Larry is a retired Army commander and the father of Lilly. Generally quiet but often judgmental, Larry can quickly go from reserved to raging within seconds.

This game has another amazing feature. It actually feels like you’re in the middle of the Zombie Apocalypse. You will find yourself making choices you never thought you’d have to make with little or no time to consider your options, then be forced to deal with the consequences of your decisions.

I played it a couple of weeks ago and must say I was pleasantly surprised. The graphics are great and the whole system of choices in the game just makes you play it over and over again. Can’t wait for the new episode!
