Harvard Doc Dissects the Undead

Two thirds of the world’s population will be completely decimated by a plague unlike anything the world has ever seen. All attempts to fight the virus will result in total failure.

Is there any hope for mankind? ZZN recently told readers how Dr. Steven C. Schlozman MD of Harvard say yes in his new book “The Zombie Autopsies: Secret Notebooks from the Apocalypse”

The book is set in the year 2013. The good news: humanity survived the dreaded 12/21/12 epidemic with no issues what so ever (much like the Y2K bug). The bad news: A super strain of influenza-like prions have turned the majority of the world into flesh-craving man-eaters.

In a unique (albeit extremely realistic) approach to Zombies, Schlosman’s Undead-creating bug is airborne.

You read that correctly, the undead of 2013 will not have to bite or even scratch you. If any infected get close enough to sneeze on you, consider yourself contaminated.

The future Z-Super Bug will be extremely contagious and resistant to any kind of vaccine or anti-virus.

The UN, CDC, and other World Health Organizations will be unable to help.

The only hope is a small Classified island, nicknamed the Crypt. Here, scientists test subjects in various stages of infection in an effort to determine if a viable cure is at all possible.

The Zombie Autopsies by Dr. Steven C. Schlozman MD

Ataxic Neurodegenerative Satiety Deficiency Syndrome (ANSD), the internationally accepted diagnostic term for what is more commonly referred to as zombiism continues to spread unabated. While some islands remain disease free, ANSD is otherwise present on every major landmass. Most of the governed world is under martial law. The signs and symptoms of the disease are universally known, but the disease itself appears both indestructible and untreatable.”

-The Zombie Autopsies

In the book, a handful of specialists have been dispatched to the Crypt to solve the biggest health problem the world has ever seen. The book details exactly (in beautiful gory detail) how an uninfected human becomes a flesh hungry ghoul, and why Zombies are they way they are.

The book is brilliantly written, as the author has made sure to assemble the expertise of his colleagues and friends and is sure to thank them in his book.

These “friends” happen to be well versed in the fields of everything from an infectious disease to on the “Legal Rights of Zombies”. Dr. Schlozman has made sure that if he didn’t know medically if or why something was or was not plausable, he would find someone who could and get their two cents.

Now you might think that a book that examines the medical plausibility and scientific reality of the Undead would be penned way over the “lay man’s” head, but that would be a false assumption. The good doctor has made every effort to ensure that anyone who picks up his book can follow along. It reads in a way that is both entertaining and intriguing.

What is it about a Zombie's brain that makes it so different from the uninfected human's?

As you read, it becomes more and more obvious that the author approached the subject with a scientist’s mind, but the average Joe in mind. Though there are many questions about the Living Dead, the scientists in the book set out to answer the only one that matters and covers them all: “why?”

Why is it that Zombies don’t get full… or for that matter fat?

Why are Zombies so aggressive?

Why do Zombies have no reaction to the other infections and diseases that infect their bodies that would kill the average human?

Why do they live, without life, when they aught to die?

Why is the destruction of the brain the only way to terminate a Zombie?

All these questions and more are answered in this amazing little book. Readers will find themselves turning pages faster then the spread of the plague as they join the search for the answers to these questions, and some that they will inevitably formulate themselves as they read.

Another great draw to the book is its general presentation. From the outside, this small 198 page book looks more like a self-help book upon first glance then a detailed scientific evaluation of walking corpses. This can be surprising when you first see it, as most would expect this kind of book (though this is actually the first of its kind) to be a thick manual rather than a light easy reader.

As you look over the cover, you will quickly note the critical praise of some really big Zombie world heavy hitters. Some of the most respected people in the genre have stepped up to sing the praises of Dr. Schlozman such as Max Brooks, Jonathan Maberry, Seth Grahame-Smith and even the Zombie Godfather himself George A. Romero!

Not that Dr. Schlozman needs the credibility: the man is a Harvard Associate Professor and accredited Psychologist, but if this book has won the respect of the Masters of Brain-munching Mayhem, you know it is worth a read.

Don’t be surprised that when you start, you don’t put it down.

We at ZZN often find ourselves with several pots on the fire, so to speak. It is not uncommon for us to get hundreds of requests for reviews, and find ourselves deep in one book, movie or comic after another to get the news to our readers in a timely manor. That being said, those of us who tackle these reviews have found that the easiest way to get through a project, is to not do more than one at a time.

Confession time: this reviewer broke that unwritten rule. When the book came to my door, I was so intrigued by its cover that I had to at least glance through it. How could I not? So I read the first two pages… I was hooked.

From the amazing images that look like hand-drawn sketches, to the faded pages, visually this book does not disappoint.

I read through it in two sittings and had this review done shortly thereafter… its THAT good.

Dr. Schlozman clearly penned the book for zombie fans, while revealing that he himself is a Zombie fan, who just so happens to be a doctor.

Only a fan could attack the Zombie genre with such a creative perspective and full respect that it deserved. This is not just some doctor trying to jump on and ride the latest Zombie craze. This is a man who did his research, asked questions that he (as a fan) always wanted answered from a scientifically plausible perspective.

Even if you pick up this book thinking “I know that Zombies aren’t real, and this is a fictional story.” By the last page you will find yourself saying “Maybe Zombies do exist!”

“I’ve written and made films about zombies for over fourty years. In that time, I’ve never been able to convince my audience that Zombies actually exist. On page one of THE ZOMBIE AUTOPSIES, Steven Schlosman takes away any doubt. This fast-moving, entertaining work will have you chuckling… and worrying.”

-George A. Romero, director of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

One of the best things about the book is that the author explains what to expect. You know that two out of the only three doctors left are infected. What you don’t know, is how long they will stay human, and if the last doctor will survive to tell the tale!

Zombies do exist!!!!…they usually in the super-market or shopping mall, oops, soory those are spaced out shoppers…lol. (akin to Shawn of the Dead…in reality more people are behaving like that which will mean it’ll be quite difficult to tell if they’re infected from a distance…hehe).

The main problem I think people and governments will have with any infection of this kind is the lame excuse for quarantine they have everywhere…just look how things like flu are dealt with – people still persist to go to work or whatever even if they’re ill, this attitude will help in the spread of any virus, sickness or toxin.
I know people will bang on about human rights of confining sick people to their homes and the expense of useing trained staff to meet their needs, but unless this sort of thing isn’t taken more seriously then there’s no hope of the majority of the human race surviving such an outbreak. And the words “shoe on the other foot” come to mind…pretty sure if it was someone else infected and the currently infected person was healthy then they’d want the other person quarantined so they don’t get sick. Such deseases and viruses exploit such weaknesses in mankind.

Anyhow, looks like an interesting book (and likely the sort of thing I will enjoy)….will have to get my mitts on that, thanks for shareing Steve.

    • The book is EPIC and a must own for any self proclaimed Zombie Enthusiast! Thanks for the read and comment!
