Dawn of the Dead 2 in the Works

Producer Richard Rubinstein has gone on the record, stating that he and his team are planning a direct sequel to the original 1979 “Dawn of the Dead” movie, according to Fangoria.

Further, director Zack Snyder told SCI FI Wire that Universal Pictures has already approached him to make a follow-up to his hit zombie remake Dawn of the Dead, but that the movie won’t be a remake of George Romero’s own sequel, Day of the Dead. Snyder said, “It’s fascinating, because it’s the sequel to our movie. I was like, ‘We should do a sequel to Day’, but they weren’t interested.”

The director said that he and screenwriter James Gunn diverged from the rules Romero created for the original Dawn, which rendered it difficult to continue remaking Romero’s movies. “Inadvertently we created a whole different world. We went off, and in a lot of ways the rules that George created don’t apply at the end of this Dawn.”

No time-line yet for the project. We’ll keep you posted.

Frightful Discussion

  1. I really hope they make a sequel to the DOTD remake. The remake is the best zombie movie.

I have watched dawn of the dead remake so many times and also found it one of the best zombie films ever! That is with the exception of 28 days and 28 weeks later – cant believe there’s still been no sequel made – like other comments I also love the walking dead seasons – just brilliant!

  2. Dawn of the dead is not just a movie; it’s a survival guide in case an outbreak should come…..A training manual on what to do and what Not to do……Personally I would rather have a large supply of water, food,
first aide kit, and my own personal rifle with a ton of ammo!

  3. Dawn of the Dead is the best zombie movie. It is fun to watch multiple times. The setup wastes no time establishing the conflict, albeit the movie title conveys a high concept film.

The Walking Dead is making zombie movies the most popular sub-genre again. Thanks.

I like dawn of the dead it kicks ass i want to see dawn of the dead 2. you should make a another dawn of the dead.

I totally agree with Kaley… I watch “Dawn of the Dead” everyday/night..mostly night. I would love to see apart two!!! BTW what happened to keeping us posted this post is two years old. I watch

  6. Zombies are in…. Dawn of the Dead 2 would bring in alot of money…. I love the new show on AMC, The Walking Dead, I have watched Dawn of the Dead at least 50 times and I see something new everytime I watch it. I think DOTD2 would be very successful!

  7. I loved Day of the Dead so a sequel would be awesome to watch. The remake was good but the original was better.

  8. Heres an exclusive for ya!
I had briefly worked a production with actor Kevin Zeiger from the DOTD remake (on a project i will not mention) and, jokingly, talked to him about a possible sequal. He did say that there is a script called “Island of the Dead” being looked at but has yet to go into production, and that he was asked to be in the sequel as well. As time passed Ive asked a few times if there was any headway to that and he said nothing yet, keep in mind last i spoke to him was just over a year ago…

A remake would be easy. They get back to the boat and push off just in time and in a mad rush the zombies dive into the lake. Ving padles them a few yards out and they slap the water with a couple blankets to keep the zombies working their way into deeper water. (zombies sink but walk on the bottom). The water is murky but the infected can still see the dark flashes of blanket to keep their attention. could have a good scene with the zombies 20 feet down looking up at the hull of the boat in the gloom. at nightfall, when their invisible to the corpses bellow, ving could row them to the other side of the island. a couple shouts later and they know if there are any more zombies on the island. They find a summer home built over the water and move in, rebuilding their lives. they could find a fishing boat and go back to the marina for supplies, all those boats are zombie free. they find squaters on a pleasure cruiser and life goes on…..

btw, I wrote a book called ‘the pizza man’, zombie mall at it’s finest. Hopefully will be out by christmas 2012. keep your eyes out.

  10. There was a sorta remake rendition of Day of the Dead (2007) it was fun ans scary but it wasnt anywhere near Romero’s zombies. They were fast and could climb walls but still worth the watch.

As for a sequel, I would love for them to make one.

  11. I think it’s possible to have a sequel. Although the movie ended with the survivors from the boat being attacked, no one was actually shown being bitten or killed. It’s possible they could have found some sort of shelter, but I think it would be more likely for them to survive if other people had arrived at the island before them, who happened to have an arsenal of zombie killing weapons. They could have stepped in before anyone was injured.
I completely understand why people didn’t like the remake of Dawn of the Dead, and while the original is one of my favorites, so is the remake. Running zombies may be out-of-the-box thinking, but most younger generations have a hard time sitting through movies where things aren’t moving at a constant fast pace. I would really love to see a sequel.

Im with you. I watched dawn of the dead a couple times and just turned of the tv when it got to the credits. The last time i watched it I watched all the way through and I definitely think a sequel should be well thought about.

  12. Dawn of the Dead 2 would be tough sequel to produce unless there are survivors ready to challenge the zombies. Dawn of the Dead (2004) was an awesome remake.

    • I disagree, I believe the ending of the 2004 version of Dawn of theDead was left wide open for a sequel. In fact, right after I watched Dawn of the Dead, I remember walking out of the theatere, thinking that Dawn of the Dead 2 had to already be in the works, being made and that I would be back in the theatre in less than a year, watching the remake. Was I ever wrong! Now here we are, almost eight years later, and nobody has even a clue if Zack Snyder is making Dawn of the Dead 2? So please, if by some chance, any of the producers or even Zack Snyder his self reads these posts…..PLEASE, PLEASE make the sequel! I know that you would make millions of horror fans, most of all, Zombie fans, very, very, very HAPPY!!!!!! Thank You…..Take care!

  13. The new 2004 remake of dawn of the dead is way bad ass. They took a low budget film from the seventies, and turned it into a high end flesh eating festival of awesomness!.
And in the seventies wasn’t there a sequal to DAWN OF THE DEAD?. I believe it was called: DAY OF THE DEAD.

  14. where’s the video

  15. Robert Y says:

even better, make it a prequel! show how it started!

    • They already made a intro,it started by a science lab trying to make a new tipe of beer and then a guy dunked it and her bit somone and so on and so on

  16. why do i get the feeling that the dog is going to come out in part two. what if theres a little village of people like in the end of i am legend?

  17. dawn of the dead 2004, simply the best zombie movie ever made. the expectations are so high on a sequel that i personally cannot imagine what it would be about or how it will be made. i however would like it if they kept to the original world (2004 movie), super fast zombies and the events taking place are just after and during the outbreak, people are shocked and scattered, all forms of communication are down, no human safe house to run to. just nomadic people sacrificing their way through the world which they once ruled entirely. i want the zombie threat to be so great that it dwarfs all human social problems. i have seen so may zombie films where the zombie problem is really not the subject of the movie, rather its the weakness of people. i am left thinking, if your life was dependent on adopting a disciplined way of life, you would not ignore it. in dawn of the dead 2004, there was a couple of cowards who just couldn’t let go or accept thing, both of them died in the hands of the zombies. there were brave and courageous characters, all of whom also got killed by the zombies. there were intelligent and calculating individuals, who also got killed by the zombies. there were disciplined and experienced individuals, who got eaten. which is what made it such a great zombie film.

    • hay it is a sequal to the origional dawn of the dead and the 2004 remake was one of the worst
zombie movies i have ever seen it shouldent even be called a remake.

  18. 100 internets says the movie will be about the police officer’s brother, who was in the chopper that was about to rescue the mall squatters before getting called back to base due to it being pwnt by recently bitten/dead people turning into zombies.

From the looks of the end of DoD, the original survivors didn’t make it. No food, limited ammunition, boat engine is wrecked, and they have nowhere to run on an island filled with a horde of infected zombies; unless they managed to run away fast enough and find some kind of shelter, or found safety by some other means.

    • I think it would cool if the kinda done like the originals make an unofficial sequal sort of like day of the dead , one man making his way down the east coast in a heavily armoured car with a cb radio maybe even finding some survivers along the way maybe finding a woman and small child hiding in a grocery store somewhere and he takes them with him in search for what he has heard on the radio about an underground bunker in florida only this time it will be a city not just a lab , 100′s of people living under there and a small army and a few scientist cant forget about having some zombies down there too for the scientist to work on , a group of soldiers go out from time to time to get food and supplys. the man woman and child make it there , but only to watch a society collapse all over again as a soldier gets biten while out on a run and doesnt tell any body and the infection ends up spreading under ground, the drifter, woman and child try to find a way back out ,as they are surounded by dozens of aggressive zombies not like the ones he incountered along the way, old ,slow and rotting but these would be fast moving and hard to get away from , but its just an idea , I think it sounds like it would be pretty good

    • wrong movie again it is a remake of the origional

  19. Northwoodslayer says:

I would love to see a sequel to the Dawn of the Dead remake with Ving Rhames, Sarah Polley and the rest of the cast that made it to the island! I know at the end the dead come running and you see the camera drop but you don’t see any of the cast go down! I also liked how the undead were super fast. Puts a new twist on just running by them. Anyhow, I would love to see the sequel made from that point. Thanks all.

    • I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. THE DAWN OF THE DEAD 2004 REMAKE WAS AMAZING!!! I HOPE IF THE SEQUAL EVER GETS MADE IT SHOULD CONTINUE RIGHT WERE IT ENDED….WITH THEM FINALLY REACHING THE ISLAND AND THEM THE ZOMBIES ARE RUNNING AT THEM. SARAH POLLY AND VING RHAMES WERE AMAZING IN THE FILM SO THEY HAD BETTER BE IN THE NEXT MOVIE…IF THERE EVER IS ONE??? I READ SOMEWHERE A FEW YEARS AGO THAT JACK SNIDER WAS IN TALKS ABOUT MAKING A PART 2 BUT WHO KNOWS IF IT WILL EVER HAPPEN??????

  20. OMGOSH i watched the remake last night and it waz friekin AWESOME except for the end where the guy got bit ) :

    • They are all great – that’s for sure.

    • it will be hard to do a follow on to the original i cant see how they would do it you would have to have the original cast ken foree and gaylen ross in it but they could catch up with them in canada as was the original plan in dawn hmmmmmmmmm this will be really great to see.

  21. make it faster we love zombies

  22. hambanana says:

i cant wait till it comes i love zombie movies.

  23. I would like to see a sequel to the original Dawn of the Dead. Of course it kind of hard to do with all the main characters pushing 80 I’m sure. The original Dawn of the Dead was the greatest zombie of all time in my opinion!

    • I agree. The original is my favorite movie of all times. The remake was done well. I own the whole series and watch them all the time. I believe I can recite the original Dawn verbatim! :)

  24. scottishgeordie39 says:

Loved the remake. let's hope the sequel is just as good and not like that dross that was the Day of the Dead remake.

    • I THOUGHT THE DAY OF THE DEAD REMAKE WAS AWESOME. ALOT OF PEOPLE DIDNT LIKE IT BUT IT WAS WAY BETTER THAN ALOT OF ZOMBIE FLICKS I HAVE SEEN. OF COURSE THE DAWN OF THE DEAD 2004 REMAKE IN MY OPINION IS THE BEST ZOMBIE MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!! I’M SURE ALOT OF PEOPLE WILL HATE ME BUT IT IS TRUE. COME ON, ROMERO IS THE “ZOMBIE KING” FOR SURE. HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PRETTY MUCH CREATING THE ZOMBIE FILM AS WE KNOW IT…..I HAVE ALL HIS MOVIES AND LOVE THEM ALL…THE ORIGINAL DAWN OF THE DEAD WAS GROUND BREAKING FOR ITS TIME, THE LATE 1970′S. BUT JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL WAS IN IT’S TIME SO IS THE 2004 VERSION NOW. WHEN I SAW IT IN THE THEATER I WAS NOT EXPECTIN GIT TO BE HALF AS GOOD AS IT WAS….I LOVED IT!!!!!!! WE NEED A SEQUAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. I just hope they do a good job!!

  26. getdownwiththedead says:
