ZZN Fan Nyky Payment wanted to know if Zombies can freeze. This is a vital question to surviving the Zombie Apocalypse so to get the answer, we turned to a couple of the coolest Undead Zeds we know: J.D. McGhoul and Paul Rierson!
J.D. McGhoul is the author of “The Brain Eater’s Bible”. Think of it as a Zombie Survival Manual for Zombies!“The zombie brain and intraosteal fibers are extremely resilient. They can be killed by the cold, but only the deep cold (temperatures below minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit). If you stumble upon a zombie who appears frozen solid, it may be only his dead vestigial tissue that is beset. His vital endo-network may be alive and well, waiting for the spring thaw.”
- J.D. McGhoul, zombie author of The Brain Eater’s Bible
So, obviously some Zombies are a bit more “together” than others. J.D. and Paul represent a small but able breed of the Undead who are capable of comprehensive thought, action and most importantly organization.
In Jason McKinney’s world of “Memoirs of the Walking Dead” the Zeds have created a literal Undead Army. Paul Rierson served in this army, and offered his testiomnial:
“What do I know about how freezing effects the undead? I know it effectively
sucks. Yes, we can freeze and yes, it can kill us. Want an anecdote as an example?
I was on temporary duty at Camp O’Bannon when the Red Cross, or Flesh Cross as we called them, brought in about two dozen human and zed refugees from Montana. It was near the end of winter and the poor undead were frozen solid. The humans were fine, but there wasn’t enough hot chocolate in the Great White North to unfreeze the zeds.Anyway, some butter bar undead second lieutenant gets the idea to set the frozen ‘gees up in front of a series of space heaters without someone on watch. The result was a mess. Once thawed, Mr. and Mrs. Zed the Undead turned into a soggy pile of crap.
The sudden thawing caused some of those unfortunate sods to burst like overripe melons. Not to get too graphic, but some of them had their parts sloughing off while others had limbs and chunks just kind of drip away like freaky candle wax. It was ghastly.
You know there’s a reason we, the undead, stay away from any weather below 25 degrees and even that causes problems. Just look at what happened to dear Charlotte [Rierson's Undead cat]. At least her bits didn’t come off, thank God. She’s pissed off enough as it is.”
-Paul Rierson Via his Human Pet Jason McKinney
So there you have it folks, Zombies can not only freeze, but thaw to present a future danger!
Stay tuned for Part 2 were Harvard Professor and Author Dr. Steve Schlozman, and Zombie Survivalist Roger Ma weigh in on the Scientific and survival/combat aspects of the “Frozen Zombie”!
