When the Dead begin to walk the earth, you better be ready! You’ll need a hellova lot more than weapons to survive the Zombie Apocalypse! Survival starts with preparation now. If you haven’t created your bug-out-bag yet, no worries! ZZN has you covered with these Essentials to get you started! With our help, you can get all the items you need for a B.O.B. for less than $100.00 total!
#1- WATER!
Water is the most abundant liquid on the planet, right? True, but most of the water is undrinkable laying around. Most think that when the Zeds start to attack they’ll be able to fill some milk cartons and bottles and be good to go. Guess again. Unfortunately, the plastic in bottles can contaminate the water after extended periods of time, and if you are going to be mobile (which you’ll have to in order to survive) you really wont want all that water literally weighing you down. The Solution?
The LifeStraw Personal Water Filter! Awarded Time Magazine’s 2005 invention of the year, the LifeStaw has the amazing ability to filter nearly any water source and make it safe to drink! In fact, if you wanted to carry the amount of filtered water that LifeStraw provides, you’d need to be ready to carry literally 264 Gallons (1000 liters) of water with your party! The straw is small, light weight and easy to use. You simply pull off the cap on top and bottom, put one end in the water and suck on the other like any other straw. When you are done, you blow out the excess and re-cap it! Check out the video and see what we mean, this thing is #1 priority!
So what makes this $20.00 straw so impressive aside from what you just saw? Lets look at it this way- if the Z-day bug is a parasite or bacteria that can survive in the water just waiting for you to take a drink, no worries- The LifeStraw filters out 99.99999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of waterborne protozoan parasites!

#2- FIRE!
You know all those old movies where the protagonist rubs two sticks together and makes fire? We call BS. The most realistic rendition of how hard it is to make fire using sticks is best seen in “Castaway” with Tom Hanks going insane over sticks and dried grass.
Need to stay warm? Want hot food? Need to boil water? You’re gonna need FIRE! The Solution?
Most survival experts (including this one) recommend you carry Flint and Steel. Very inexpensive, Flint and steel are two items you can strike together to easily make a spark big enough to ignite a fire!
A word of caution using fire- never start it IN your home or safe haven. Also, try to use fire during the day. The light from the fire may attract unwanted attention to your location that otherwise would have allowed you to stay hidden from other survivors and Zeds.

#3- SURVIVAL FIRST AID KIT
Now, we know what you’re thinking: “I get the antibiotics and gauze, but are a few band-aids really gonna save my life?”No. Wrong kind of First Aid Kit.
You’ll need ALL of the essentials in one place!! Check this out: Lifeline First Aid kits give you waterproof matches, an 18 x 12 in. piece of aluminum foil, an 80 x 50 in. emergency blanket, 50 ft. of fishing line, 4 fish hooks and 4 sinker weights. Also includes 8 ft. of snare wire, a surgical blade, 5 wound closure strips, 3 safety pins, a map compass, emergency whistle, 10 ft. of emergency cord and 36 in. of duct tape (because nothing says Zombie Survival like duct tape) all in a Ziploc waterproof bag, starting at just $9.00! #4- FOOD!
So when it comes to a MRE (Meal Ready to Eat) kit, you actually have many more options that you’d think! Check out this beef stew on the right. All the nutrients you could need in an easy to mix and make pack.
Most MREs are only a few bucks a piece and are cheaper if you buy them in bulk and that is exactly what we recommend you do.
Don’t want to spend the money to buy a few? Chuck at ZGB had your back again with a 24 hour home made MRE!

#5- MAPS!
GPS may be around for a while after the Zeds rise so you may be able to use google maps for a bit, but don’t get too cozy.
The best map is the one in your mind. Go around your town at night with sunglasses on. Get familiar with land marks not based on light. The reason for this is that if and when the lights go out, you will be amazed how different the town you have lived in for years looks. Its much easier to get “lost in you own back yard” than you would think. Make mental notes of where things are and how to navigate your town on foot. Then draw out hand maps of your town’s landmarks. You can use street names if you must, but for the most part, try to avoid them as they may not be easily spotted.
The reason to do all this prep at night is because you already know your town pretty well by day.
Once you have your town down, you’ll need other area maps. Purchase maps of your state and surrounding towns. These will be crucial in getting wherever you are going!
So there you have it! Bug Out Bag started all for under a hundred bucks! What’s in YOUR B.O.B.? Tell us in comments below!

A long samurai sword is missing. That’s what I’d have.
And the LifeStraw is an awesome little water filter!
Under #2 Fire you need to add tinder for that spark. Steel wool or a cotton ball covered with vasoline will transform that spark into a nice flame.
Excellent point!
My friend shared this with me. A excellent site not just for the zombie apocalypse. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150776614427436&set=a.114480717435.99528.104062822435&type=1&theater
I think that should read as 6 Essential Items for the Zombie Apocalypse with GUNS & AMMO as # 1
I’d say an axe or some other good melee weapon would be more preferable, in case you have to fight a gun would make a lot of noise(unless its surpressed or something like that) where an axe would be a silent killer, and with a bit of training a very effective weapon too.
Bow and Arrows, two machetes and improvised explosives for those wicked getaways…
